Most people never imagine that they will have the need to consult a sex therapist. When your sex life is going well, it seems like the easiest, most natural thing in the world. How upsetting it can be, then, when something starts to go wrong. Maybe you’ve lost desire, or the desire is there but the erection or orgasm is not. Perhaps your partner seems to be losing interest, or conversely, to have insatiable interest. Or perhaps you are experiencing physical or emotional pain during sex. Many factors can interfere in the ability to enjoy pleasurable sexual activity. In circumstances such as these, the services of a sex therapist can prove very helpful.
What exactly does a sex therapist do? This is often misunderstood, raising fears of having to be watched having sex, or even having to have sex with an instructor. These notions are absolutely not what an AASECT Certfied sex therapists does, and such activities are strictly forbidden by our professional code of ethics. We are licensed mental health or medical professionals with additional training in sex therapy techniques which include diagnosis, psychotherapy, education, homework assignments, relationship skills, behavioral skill training, and collaboration with doctors and healthcare providers.
While some sexual dysfunction can be treated with a pill, in many cases underlying relationship and psychological patterns must be addressed as well in order to achieve physical and emotional satisfaction. Sex therapists adopt a holistic approach that takes into account the body, mind, emotions, behaviors, and interpersonal relationships.
